First Meaningful Paint

The point at which a page’s primary content becomes visible, rather than just its first pixel.

In practice

It has been superseded by Largest Contentful Paint, which measures the same idea with a definition that can be compared between sites.

If an old report still quotes it, migrate the target to LCP before setting performance budgets.

Why it matters

The distinction it introduced still matters: a visible header is not a usable page.

Knowing why it was retired prevents optimising for a metric no tool reports any more.
