Image Compression

Reducing the file size of an image while keeping the quality a visitor actually perceives.

In practice

Compress after resizing, not before, and compare at the size the image is displayed rather than at full width.

Automate it in the pipeline; manual compression is abandoned the first week an editor is busy.

Why it matters

Images are the largest share of page weight on most sites, so this is where the first real speed gain lives.

Smaller files help most on mobile data, where the slowest visitors are.
