Average Position

The mean position of a site’s results across the impressions it received.

In practice

Never report it site-wide. It moves when a new low-ranking query appears, which looks like a decline while traffic grows.

Track it per query or per cluster, alongside clicks, so the number has something to explain.

Why it matters

It is the most misread metric in Search Console and the cause of many false alarms.

Read correctly, per query, it shows whether a specific page is gaining ground.
