Code 410

Gone: the resource existed, has been removed deliberately, and is not coming back.

In practice

Use it when retiring content permanently — expired listings, discontinued products with no successor.

Reserve it for cases you are certain about; unlike a 404, it states that no return is expected.

Why it matters

Engines generally drop a 410 from the index faster than a 404.

On large catalogues, that speed matters for keeping the index aligned with real inventory.
