Most sites do not need a separate file: image entries can live inside the existing page sitemap.
It earns its place when images load through JavaScript or come from a different domain, where a crawler may never see them in the HTML.
Why it matters
Image search is a real acquisition channel for retail, travel and recipe content.
It is the cheapest way to get lazy-loaded media discovered when the rendering fix is a bigger project.
