Sitemap Directive

The robots.txt line that points crawlers at the site’s XML sitemap.

In practice

Give the absolute URL, and list a sitemap index rather than a dozen individual files.

It belongs at the top of robots.txt and applies to every bot regardless of which user agent group it sits under.

Why it matters

It is the one discovery route that works without a crawler ever reaching your home page.

It costs one line and removes any dependency on a search console submission being remembered.
